Catalan region of Spain, northern end Costa del Sol

This river bridge-weir is the farthest up-river that sea fish can reach and is always stuffed with mullet.

The locals use sweetcorn straight off the cob or streamer weed as bait so I did the same.

The rigs are simple: a big float (a perch bob is ideal) with the weight immediately underneath and a size 2/0 hook 18in from the float all on at least 10lb line.

The swims are fast moving and very rocky as well as full of snags from the streamer weed.

The mullet are clean and full of fight. When one gets greedy enough to snatch your bait they take off much faster than the big carp that are also there (up to 16lb that I have seen, but there are bigger).

There was a very amusing incident whilst I was fishing one day.

A German tourist had purchased a small telescopic rod from the local town (L’Estartit) and got really impatient. So he rigged up a snag rig of three trebles and barrel weight, cast out and drew back, but it looked like he’d snagged at least two fish as his rod simply collapsed in little pieces under the pressure and he stormed off in a real temper.

The situation was not made any better as I and another angler were both reeling in fish caught in a sporting manner.

I still have the salvageable pieces of his tackle as he threw it in the river.
